Drake's View Residential

Drake’s View House is certainly a home from home. Our professional, highly trained and passionate team of staff take pride in providing our young people with opportunities that can help them to grow as individuals, develop life skills for independence and lifelong social skills that can be taken with them into their future lives. Drake’s View offers weekly boarding places (Monday to Friday mornings) for 10 boys/girls (5-16 years) who attend Mount Tamar School. At Drake’s View we help to instil the drive for our young people to want to achieve their full potential by encouraging and supporting them with homework, precision teaching, art, cooking, music, sports, independent travel and so much more. Whilst providing a safe, happy and structured environment, it is our shared ethos with the school of ‘Aspire’ ‘Adventure’ ‘Achieve’ that runs through the core of Drake’s View House

Independence

Drake’s View strives for its young people to become independent, self-sufficient and confident individuals. Our aim at Drake’s View is to ensure its residents are equipped and fully prepared for life after leaving school. Promoting a healthy balanced diet, developing organisational skills/routines and training our young individuals to socialise appropriately, in a variety of settings will improve the prospects of our young people; enabling them to achieve their full potential.

Activities

Drake’s View offers a wide range of activities for its residents. This again promotes independence in a fun, safe and sociable environment. Drake’s View residents can choose from a wide range of activities on offer in the evening such as; swimming, Trethorne, Arts and crafts, cooking, River Dart, den building, farm access (please see website), fishing, homework (precision reading) and much more.

Residential trips abroad

Drake’s View aims to go on at least 1 residential trip abroad each year. We do this by applying to Happy Days Charity and through a donation from the Cayzer Trust. This gives our residents the opportunity to travel abroad and experience different cultures; something they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. In recent trips we have been to Salou, Benidorm, Majorca and we are in the process of booking our next one… so watch this space.

Services

Drake’s View offers a wide range of services to the parents and carers of our young people. We offer home programmes which aid parents to manage their child’s behaviour during the holidays, using our behaviour reinforcement system. We also offer support and advice on behavioural/social issues, as part of a drop-in service. This is in a casual environment and flexible basis where parents and carers can pop in to pay us a visit and ask about any issues they may have.

Plymouth Information and Advice Service

This year saw the first course run by the PIAS team. The parents/carers of our young people were introduced to an exciting, useful and highly enjoyable course; based around 1 session per week. The 10 week long programme aims to provide quality time for our young individuals and their parents/carer to develop skills such as communication and to provide a shared memorable experience in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Coming soon- Drake’s View Independence 6 week intensive course

Year 10 and 11 students will soon have the opportunity to participate in a 6 week course designed to develop their independence and life skills. The course will involve attending interviews, weekly work placements, and day to day living skills such as budgeting, independent travelling, washing, cooking, sexual health and much more.

IF Plans

Drake’s View now integrate their targets in collaboration with Mount Tamar School. This allows us to work as a whole school, as opposed to separate departments, both striving to achieve common goals to improve outcomes for our children and young adults.
