CIDA / ECDL
What’s It About?
CIDA/ ECDL (Certificate in Digital Applications/ European Computing Driving License) enables candidates to:
Become independent and discerning users of ICT, able to make informed decisions about its use and aware of its implications for individuals, organisations and society.
Acquire and apply creative and technical skills, knowledge and understanding of ICT in a range of contexts.
- Develop ICT-based solutions to solve problems.
- Develop their understanding of current and emerging technologies and their social and commercial impact.
- Develop their understanding of the legal, social, economic, ethical and environmental issues raised by ICT.
- Recognise potential risks when using ICT, and develop safe, secure and responsible practice.
- Develop the skills to work collaboratively.
- Have an avid interest in ICT.
- Enjoy using a range of software applications
- Be able to complete ICT tasks quickly and confidently without support.

Students are expected to manage their own progress during the coursework task and so will be required to work outside of lesson time if necessary due to falling behind. However, students will have adequate time allocated within lessons to complete the project.
There are two separate exams, one of which is based on ‘pre-release’ material provided by the exam board. Each exam is worth 25% of the overall marks for the course. There is also one controlled assessment task, set by the exam board worth 75% of the overall marks.
Students learn about ‘ICT in today’s world’, including: ICT systems, Exchanging and presenting information, Manipulating data, Legal, social, environmental and ethical issues.
The first exam is based on this learning, and a specific task is set by the exam board for the controlled assessment project for this year.
Students learn about the use of ‘ICT systems in context’, within a business setting: Information about a specific business is released in advance of the second exam, and exam questions relate to that information.
Choosing from several tasks provided by the exam board, students will then create a solution to a business problem using ICT – for example they may be asked to create a multimedia website or a computer game.
