The History of MTSOC
In 2003 Mount Tamar School began to look at different 'Virtual Learning Environments' or VLE's. The one that was being developed the most and already being used in higher education was a package called Moodle [1]. Not only did it meet all the BECTA requirements of a VLE but it also meets the requirements of the [Mount Tamar School] software policy of using Open Source and free software wherever possible. Also unlike other VLE's it is actively being developed.
The Moodle [2] software was installed and at the same time the web site domain name for Mount Tamar School http://www.mounttamar.org.uk was registered. MTSOC was born. Over the next two years the ICT Department added courses to the VLE and encouraged pupils to use it as the resource for the materials.
In late 2006 the Mount Tamar School web pages were set up and it was decided to split the web pages from the VLE and so http://www.mtsoc.org.uk became the new home of MTSOC.
In early 2007 the title 'Virtual Learning Environment' was changed to 'Learning Platform'; so MTSOC is now a 'Learning Platform' which not only provides the resources but also a number of other things which make up the total learning experience.
The DfES has directed all schools to have a 'Learning Platform' in place and up and running by Sept 2008 - Mount Tamar School is ahead of the game!
Pupils know the Mount Tamar School Learning Platform by the letters MTSOC; the Mount Tamar School Online Classroom or 'empty sock'. The logo came out of the MTSOC name!
