The ICT Department -  Development Plan September 2007

“Children cannot be effective in tomorrow’s world if they are trained in yesterday’s skills” - HMI 1998

Development is an important aspect of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department at Mount Tamar School. To stand still in today's new age of technology is not an option and to that end the department, in association with other local schools, actively looks for new and exciting software and hardware.

On the software front as soon as an upgrade to an exiting piece of software is announced then it is evaluated and added to the school network as soon as possible. New developments in hardware are watched and, if it is right, evaluation devices purchased and looked at.

Listed below are the main aspects which will be looked at this year:

ICT School Mark

Work will begin on the School Mark for ICT. It is planned that the process will take about 18 months to complete.

Electronic Toys '

The ICT Department over the last few years looked at and evaluated a number of different devices. During the coming Year the new Eee PC will be looked at and evaluated.

Staff Proxy

A number of staff now require access to the 'staffproxy' so that they can research materials for lesson content. Individual staff will be given access to the staffproxy and they will be warned that pupils may not use their computers whilst they have such access.

White List

The 'white list' will be added to the Trafficlights software as an integral part. Staff will be able to to set an individual or group of pupils to one of three settings: Internet off, Whitelisted sites, normal SWGfL filtering. Staff training will be needed.

ICT Documents

During this year the ICT Departments policiess will be converted from paper copy to web based copy. This will reduce the paper load and allow simpler and more frequent updating of the documents.

Trafficlights

This software is being actively developed by Steve Kemsley of Magicka Interactive. Short term requests for features often turn up and are included within the next release of the software. This year pupil access will be looked at with regards to pupils being able to see their trafficlight 'spots'. A school policy on this will need to be written.

Key Stage 3 ICT

The ICT Coordinator will attend the meetings regarding the new Key Stage 3 ICT entitlement. Work will then begin on writing the first years units (Year 7). ICt app markbooks will be looked at to record pupils' progress.

Hardware

Further computers will be purchased so that each classroom in the school has a minimum of two networked computers available to pupils. Staff are not to 'share' their laptops with pupils.

Software

A new build will be installed on all curriculum PC's at the start of the Autumn term. Any teething problems will be sorted out and pupils will be introduced to the new system. It is anticipated that a number of software packages will be updated at the same time so some retraining will be required.
