The ICT Department -  Hardware Policy

“The use of appropriate hardware (and software) to help in the development and production of a required outcome or document is important. The use of the right tool for the job is not only important but promotes good habbits”

Mount Tamar School has made sure over the years that the best hardware is made available to, not only staff, but pupils as well. The ICT Room has been set up so that pupils do not need to share computers but are able to work and learn independently. In addition the ICt Room computers have audio and video devices permanently connected to them so that electronic communications can take place both via the Intranet and the Internet.

The ICT Department -  Aspects of Hardware

What is Hardware
Hardware is the physical parts that go together to make up a computer; it is not the software. Most computers consist of a box which holds the central processing unit, the memory, one or more hard drives and a power supply unit; a monitor to view the work being done; a mouse and keyboard.

Specific computers around the school have had extra peripherals added to them in the form of webcams, headphones and microphones.

Academic Network Computers

Pupils have access via their login to the academic computers. All the academic computers in the secondary department and most of the computers in the primary department are linked into the school network and are capable of accessing the Internet. All the academic networked computers run Gentoo Linux as their main operating system.
The expectation is that pupils will use and look after any academic computers that they use, making sure that they leave any hardware in a way that the next person can use it. Pupils who do not use hardware in an appropriate way can have their login removed from them.

Mini Laptops

After evaluating their usefulness Mount Tamar School has purchased a class set of Eee PC's which teaching staff are able to borrow on a lesson by lesson basis though a booking sheet with the Assistant Head. When used it is important that the member of staff involved monitors the use and makes sure that any work carried out by a pupil is saved to their own work area and not to the mini-laptop.
Any mini laptops used should be returned in original condition to the Assistant Head for checking and charging as required.

Mobile Devices

More and more mobile devices are being brought into school both by staff and pupils; these range from laptops to Internet enabled mobile phones. Mount Tamar School does not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage to these devices. With the agreement of the Network Manager and/or the ICT Coordinator the devices can be connected to the Mount Tamar School network.

Pupils Own Devices

A number of pupils now bring in their own devices. Mount Tamar School does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage to any device brought into school.
Mount Tamar School runs a 'bluetooth' server which allows files to be transferred from devices with bluetooth connectivity to a central storage area. Any files uploaded must be moved from the central storage area to the users storage area or face the file being deleted.

Admin Network Computers

Mount Tamar School Administration Department has a network of computers connected via the school network to services both Intranet and Internet based.

Staff Laptops

All teaching staff are issued with laptops to help them in developing classroom and content materials. It is the responsibility of the member of staff to look after the laptop and to transport it in a suitable and safe manner.
Staff should not hold any sensitive information on their laptop and pupils are to be discouraged from using a staff laptop at any time. Staff may ask the ICT Coordinator for access to the staff proxy to allow unfiltered access to the Internet for educational research and use in the classroom.
Staff are encouraged to backup any files held on their laptops to the school servers on a regular basis.

Electronic Toys

Mount Tamar School uses initiative tools to aid pupils to learn. Mini laptops have been evaluated and now available for class groups to use.
Recently Nintendo DS machines and brain training software was purchased to encourage pupils to learn basic skills. There is an evaluation going on on the progress being made by the group using the Nintendo's compared to other teaching methods.
Whenever electronic toys are in use in the classroom pupils are expected to look after them and return them to staff at the end of the loan period.

Peripheral Devices

With technology moving on a number of peripheral devices have been purchased to allow pupils to access the most up to date technologies.

  • Video cameras - These are used by the English Department to support the teaching of Media studies;
  • Webcams - All the computers in the ICT have webcams attached. It is expected that pupils will use the cameras appropriately and not alter the settings.
  • Headphones - To allow the listening to of speech, music, etc. Pupils need to look after the headphones and return them to their position on the monitors at the end of the lesson.
  • Microphones - Microphones are sometimes integrated into the webcams or the headphones. Pupils need to look after the microphones and replace them if required.
